When news of Napoleon's escape from Elba reaches Woodfield Hall, Harriet Weston's cousins are among the first to enlist in Wellington's army.

Bereft at their departure, Harriet sets off to bid her cousins a final farewell. Caught up in the confusion of embarkation at Harwich, she comes to the aid of an old beggar woman who insists on telling Harriet her fortune - her 'Three Paths to Midnight'.

Alarmed by such a prediction, Harriet rushes away and falls almost immediately into the arms of the mysterious Captain Hunter.
Tragically, the events so vividly foretold are destined to take Harriet on a voyage of love, death and deceit and even to the battlefields of Waterloo, before she is free to follow her own path to happiness.
